How is artificial intelligence acknowledging changing attitudes to healthcare?

When we think of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, it’s relatively easy to conjure up images of research and development teams combing through mountains of data in order to extract the most valuable information necessary to make their clinical trial a success. Fortunately, the adoption of algorithms and other forms of data analytics are making this process a lot more efficient and effective – but how is the employment of artificial intelligence shaping our perception of the healthcare sector?

It’s clear that data analytics has transformed the landscape of a wide range of other industries. It’s now standard practice to employ AI in some shape or form in fintech, and businesses across the marketing and insurance sectors are also embracing the benefits of this technology. However, their goals are quite different to those within the healthcare industry, with the former often focusing on harnessing AI to boost sales numbers, engage with potential customers, or increase brand awareness.

Our focus is a little different. At Permea, we’re interested in using data analytics to support research and development teams throughout the clinical trial process, using natural language processing and social listening to understand what patients do and don’t want from their treatment. By turning huge amounts of data into detailed and useful insights, biotech companies are able to focus on what matters most: developing new medications and therapies and improving the lives of countless people across the globe.

AI has the potential to transform healthcare – and not just in the ways you might initially expect. By filling gaps in existing knowledge, we’re not only able to implement real-world improvements in patient care, but also approach clinical trials from a fresh and innovative perspective. Patients are no longer expected to put up with any major inconveniences and side effects of medications or therapies – something an increasing number of HCPs are recognizing. The purpose of treatment is to improve the life of the person experiencing it, and if patients don’t respond well to certain aspects of a medication, then it’s time to revisit the drawing board.

This explosion of data analytics in healthcare is a gamechanger for the pharmaceutical industry. Data analytics improves reliability and increases patient quality of life by studying patient opinions in detail and breaking themdown into understandable and coherent chunks, before using them to aid research and development in the pharmaceutical industry. By focusing on data-driven approaches to research and development, we’ll be seeing an actual, tangible change in the number of innovative new concepts appearing on the market very soon.

AI is gradually becoming a more prominent of all of our lives, and whilst many media outlets do tend to focus on doomsday scenarios of robots taking over our cities, the reality is a little less dramatic. The benefits of harnessing the power of data analytics to improve the quality of life for countless patients need to be considered by HCPs on a wider scale, with the huge potential for major medicinal developments not to be ignored.
